KNIVES AND SWORDS

For much of the decade from 1985-1995 most of my work was on collaborative knives and swords. I came to this work mostly as an opportunity to be an engraver outside of the firearms field which I felt was limited in range of subject matter. As my work expanded to a more sculptural technique, under the influence of Japanese sword furniture, I found knife and sword work readily adaptable. I was fortunate to enter this field at the time when the bladesmiths' art was enjoying an unprecedented renaissance, and had the good fortune to meet and work with some of the very best of these smiths. I was also fortunate to know several active and enthusiastic collectors, and my work blossomed technically and , I think artistically during this time. Since the late 90's, for various reasons, I have been doing less of this work as I range into other fields, notably boxes.
The aspect of the edged work I miss the most is the collaborative experience working with such accomplished bladesmiths as
Phil Baldwin, Don Fogg, Louis Mills and Yoshindo Yoshihara.
It's a great pleasure to work with such accomplished artists and there is always much to be learned.
An art knife or sword is a paradoxical combination of beauty and lethality, which I find appealing.
I will continue with this work, but on a more limited basis.

38
Gama-Sennin Kogatana
Pattern-welded blade by Kiyoshi Kato
Overall length in sheath is 25.5cm - 10"
Materials are Wenge wood, Mammoth ivory, Ebony, silver, copper, gold.
Gama-Sennin is a Japanese legendary immortal who keeps the company of a three legged toad (gama) and also is associated with the peach of immortality. In this piece I chose to allude to the legend by showing the toad reaching for the peach. He has become separated from the immortal.
39
Gama-Sennin Kozuka handle (
detail of 38. above).
Silver, copper, gold.
40
Zen Camp Knife
Pattern-welded blade by Phillip Baldwin
Overall length in sheath 21cm - 8.25"
Materials are Wenge wood, Mammoth ivory, copper, shibuichi, gold.
This was one of my first efforts using only Japanese alloys and metal
techniques
on a knife handle.
41
Morning-Glory Hunter
Pattern-welded blade with "spirit" pattern by Don Fogg
Overall length 20cm - 7.85"
Materials are Ebony, silver, gold.
The Ebony is carved to simulate weathered wood with a vine of Morning-Glory, weaving out from a decayed area.
42
 Autumn Dagger
Pattern-welded blade by Phillip Baldwin
Overall length approx. 28cm - 11"
Materials are Wenge wood, silver, gold, enamel.
The theme of the handle is small pools of water surrounded be fallen leaves.
43
Ice Dagger
Pattern-welded blade by Phillip Baldwin
Overall length approx. 25cm - 9.75"
Materials are Ebony, silver, gold, enamel.
The overall theme is ice crystals and pine with enamel inserts with engraving underneath to represent ice.
44
Gama-Sennin Folder
Pattern-welded blade steel by Phillip Baldwin
Overall length (open) 21cm - 8.3"
Handle materials are silver, copper, gold.
Continuing the Gama-sennin theme (see 38. and 39. above). Here is gamagazing longingly for his lost sennin. The peach of immortality on the reverse.
45
Chrysanthemum Folder
Pattern-welded blade and bolster steel by Don Fogg
Overall length(open) 21cm - 8.3"
Handle materials are silver, gold.
Garden theme of Chrysanthemum, buds, leaves and butterfly.
46
Grasshopper Folder
Pattern welded blade and bolster steel by Don Fogg
Overall length(open) 21cm - 8.3"

Grasshopper theme with moon and clouds on reverse.
47
Spider Folder
Collaboration with Fred Carter
Fred made the knife (with stainless Damascus blade steel by Devin Thomas) and I made the scale inserts.
Overall length(open) 16.5cm - 6.5"
Scale inserts are silver and gold.
48
Magic Sword
Pattern-welded blade by Phillip Baldwin
Overall length 58.5cm - 23"
Handle materials are Ebony, silver, gold, enamel, boulder opal
The theme of this sword is the veil of illusion. The Ebony handle
represents the veil and is pierced in areas revealing light behind. Following the theme, the opal is set in an opening something like a wakening eye-lid.
49
Bat Knife
Pattern-welded blade by Don Fogg with high texture showing and cathedral grain pattern on the reverse.
Overall length 39.5cm - 15.5"
Handle materials are Ebony, Wenge, Mammoth ivory, gold, silver
This piece is an homage to the bat and night-time. The reverse of the
handle shows an abalone crescent moon behind pierced Wenge.
50
Life and Death Dagger
Pattern-welded blade by Don Fogg with high texture on one side (death) and cathedral pattern (life) on the other side.
Overall length 43cm -17"
Handle materials are Ebony, silver, gold, boulder opal
This knife portrays the duality of life with pairs of opposites: life/death - good/evil - beauty/ugliness.
The "life" side shows an orchid and a boulder opal, representing light. The "death" side shows a demon with the Ebony handle pierced in a disturbing chaotic manner revealing the textured blade-tang below.

51
Maple Leaf Tanto
Japanese blade forged in the totally traditional manner by Louis Mills from his own steel made from iron.
Kogatana companion blade also made by Louis.
Overall length 50cm - 19.85"
All other work including handle -wrapping (tsuka maki) by
Kelso.
Materials are Wenge wood, Ebony, silver, gold, sting-ray skin, silk. Sageo (silk tie-cord) by Junko Narikawa.
This is, I think, my favorite Japanese style piece from this period (late
80s). The design is all original.
